Is a fever actually a good sign?

In our last post we talked about how to boost the immune system and prevent getting sick. But what should we do if we do end up feeling under the weather?

As discussed last week, a great way to boost the immune system is to get Chiropractic adjustments. The Chiropractic adjustment significantly increases the white blood cells in the body. Just 15 minutes after the adjustment the immune system is already working harder! At first signs of illness we recommend getting an adjustment as soon as possible!

What if temperatures start to climb and you realize you or your child have a fever?

Many people instinctively want to bring the fever down. However, the fever is actually a good thing, and shouldn’t be reduced except in a few, very severe circumstances.

The fever is actually the body’s immune system going to work! As the temperature in the body rises, the disease fighting cells in the body are more efficient at killing off viruses and bacteria. These white blood cells work better in warmer temperatures. But, the bad guys do not do well in the heat. The fever is actually working to kill off the virus or bacteria- they can’t stand the heat!

This explains why a recent report from the Pediatrics journal says giving a child a fever reducer, like Tylenol, can prolong the illness. This is because the body to fighting to raise the temperature to fight the infection and the medication is attempting to bring it down.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics:

“The primary goal of treating the febrile child should be to improve the child’s overall comfort rather than focus on the normalization of body temperature.”

So, instead of trying to bring down the fever focus on resting, getting plenty of fluids and getting adjusted as often as possible! By doing this, the body’s natural disease fighting process is being supported and the immune system can do its job!

If the discomfort becomes too much and you do choose to take a pain reliever when you have a fever, choose Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Never use aspirin in a child with a fever! It can cause serious complications.

There are times when a fever in a child is a concern. One concern would be a sudden change in a child’s behavior. If they become lethargic or disoriented, that could be an emergency.  Also in cases of infants and children who have weak immune systems, a fever can become serious.  We have included a link down below for more information about kids and fevers.

In every case, use your best judgment and always call your health care provider with questions or concerns. If you have any questions one of our doctors can answer for you give us a call, or come on in for a consultation click here to set that up.

Chiropractic boosts the immune system

It seems like everyone is getting sick this time of year! What can you do to boost your immune system and stay healthy this cold and flu season?

Chiropractors are sometimes called “holistic” doctors. That is because we are doctors who consider the health of the “whole body”. We are not just the back pain doctors! A great example of how chiropractic benefits the whole body is how the adjustment boosts the immune system.

Researchers drew blood before and after a spinal adjustment to measure the effect of Chiropractic on the immune system. The study of the blood showed that the disease-fighting cells in the body increase significantly 15 minutes following a chiropractic adjustment to the spine! The adjustment causes a “burst” of white blood cells, which are the cells that fight viruses and bacteria in the body.

Chiropractic adjustment help support the body’s natural process and optimizes the functions of the body!

Another way to support the immune system is vitamin D. Vitamin D is created in the body when sunlight hits the skin. This time of year none of us are doing much sunbathing! It’s important to supplement with oral Vitamin D. This Harvard study shows that consistently taking vitamin D supplements protected against colds, flu and respiratory infections.

Chiropractic for Medicare recipients

Did you know Medicare can cover chiropractic care?

We hear people say all the time- I didn’t know Medicare covered chiropractic!

Unfortunately, this idea can result in Medicare patients never getting the care they need. When patients don’t know they have access to chiropractic care, they can end up having more invasive treatments, like surgery.

Medicare can be difficult to navigate for some clinics

The truth is Medicare has a reputation for being difficult to work with.  As a result, sometimes clinics shy away from Medicare altogether.  At Hurley Chiropractic we have a knowledgeable team that has worked within Medicare guidelines for many years. The great thing is, understanding Medicare means making sure you receive the care you need!

Medicare has specific rules, understanding them keeps surprises from happening

Medicare has very specific rules about all treatments. This is true in a chiropractic clinic and in other types of clinics. When you’re looking for care, a clinic that understands your coverage can help you avoid headaches and confusion.  This avoids you having to fight with your insurance or being left with an unexpected big bill.

At Hurley Chiropractic we understand that we have to train and educate our team about Medicare rules so you don’t have to! We try to explain in simple terms what to expect and at the same time we know how to maximize the benefits you already have.

If we can help you to understand your chiropractic coverage click HERE to speak with one of our knowledgeable staff members.

Balance and preventing falls in the elderly!

Do you worry about falling?

Would it surprise you to hear that Chiropractic adjustments may improve balance and reduce falls in elderly individuals?
Maybe you thought chiropractic was just for back pain, so how could it improve balance?

It’s true that patients report relief of back pain through Chiropractic adjustments, but the adjustment also benefits the brain and whole body in other ways!  As a result, the adjustment actually changes the way your brain uses information. This is why older patients under Chiropractic care may be at less risk for falls.

How does the adjustment help with balance?

One study examined several reasons that contribute to the risk of falls.  After just 12 weeks of chiropractic adjustments, patients in the study had significant improvements in ankle joint position sense and reaction time.

Let’s explain what “ankle joint position sense” really means, and how they tested it.

Position sense is how the body tells the brain where it’s feet are while walking and standing.

During this study, participants stood on a wobble board and were asked to move their ankle into certain positions to test the body’s “position sense”.

An example of position sense is when you eat a sandwich while watching TV.  Your body has to know how to get your hand from your plate to your mouth without watching your hand. Having a good sense of where your body is in space is a major indicator of balance. A decrease in our position sense makes it more likely to trip or fall.

So how could chiropractic improve position sense?

Each joint of the spine has lots of sensors that tell the brain the position we are in. The adjustment activates these sensors and sends a flood of information to the brain. This flood of information helps with position sense and can help to improve balance!

Another important cause of falls in the elderly is dizziness. Another survey reported that Chiropractic care helped with dizziness also. Looking at a group of patients at the average age of 70 years old, most patients saw improved balance and less dizziness after 8 weeks of Chiropractic care.
